Where It All Started

Joel's interest in music and memorabilia began at just six years of age. His father, Doug Owen, owned a group of record stores in Sydney called Sound Advice, which were later acquired by Brash's. Growing up around the record business meant music was a constant part of Joel's early life.

Doug would regularly come home with promotional material from the stores — posters, badges, records and other music-related items — and those pieces became the beginning of Joel's fascination with collecting.

​

Doug was also a professional entertainer and became well known in Melbourne's entertainment scene. Growing up around both the music retail industry and live entertainment gave Joel an early appreciation for the people, stories and memorabilia associated with music.

What began as a childhood interest gradually developed into a serious collecting passion. Over the following decades, Joel continued collecting autographs and music memorabilia, researching signatures, buying and selling pieces and studying how genuine signatures can vary across different stages of an artist's career.

That experience eventually led to the creation of Autograph Alley.

 

About Joel Owen

Joel has been collecting autographs and music memorabilia for more than three decades, with a particular interest in signed music memorabilia.

​

Over that time, he has examined a wide range of signatures from musicians, actors, entertainers and other notable figures, developing extensive knowledge of how signatures can vary between different periods of a person's life and career.

Autograph authentication is rarely as simple as comparing one signature with another.

​

Genuine signatures can change significantly depending on a person's age, the circumstances in which something was signed, the writing instrument used, the surface being signed, the speed of the signing and the period in the person's career.

​

For this reason, Autograph Alley uses a combination of signature research, comparative analysis, provenance information, known authentic reference material and technology-assisted examination when assessing an autograph.

How Autograph Alley Approaches Authentication

Every autograph submitted to Autograph Alley is assessed on its individual characteristics.

The examination may consider features including:

• letter and character formation

• stroke shape and direction

• baseline and overall structure
